This Saturday is Supper Club Night here at Bishops Bay, and that got us wondering in our best Jerry Seinfeld voice: What’s the deal with Supper Clubs in Wisconsin?
Wisconsin’s supper clubs are a cherished part of the state’s cultural and culinary heritage, offering a unique dining experience that combines hearty meals blended with a uniquely Wisconsin sense of community. These establishments, often family-owned and situated in rural areas, have their roots in the early to mid-20th century.
The concept of the supper club in the United States is credited to Milwaukee native Lawrence Frank, who established the first such venue in Beverly Hills, California, during the 1930s. These clubs started to gain popularity in the 1930s and 1940s, evolving from earlier establishments like roadhouses and dance halls that operated during Prohibition. After the repeal of Prohibition, these venues transformed into supper clubs, offering visitors a full evening of entertainment, from cocktails to dinner and even live performances.
In Wisconsin, the supper club tradition took an especially strong hold after World War II. These establishments became destinations where people would spend the entire evening, enjoying a leisurely meal followed by entertainment such as live music or dancing. The emphasis was on creating a relaxed, communal atmosphere where diners could unwind and socialize.
A hallmark of Wisconsin supper clubs is their consistent menu offerings, which often include prime rib, steaks, chicken, and fish. The Friday night fish fry is another Wisconsin tradition, reflecting the state’s cultural history and local resources. Additionally, the brandy old-fashioned cocktail is a staple at supper clubs, showcasing a regional twist on the classic drink. For more history about brandy cocktails in Wisconsin, see our previous post.
Despite changes in dining trends over the decades, Wisconsin’s supper clubs have remained popular, preserving their unique blend of dining, community, and entertainment. Today, they offer a nostalgic experience that celebrates both the state’s history and its commitment to hospitality.
And we here at Bishops Bay are proud to bring you our version of the traditional Supper Club experience every other Saturday this winter. For the full menu, see below.
