Opportunities To Donate To People In Need
Bishops Bay is offering a couple of convenient ways to give back this holiday season!
Toys for Tots
We’re proud to support Toys for Tots, a U.S. Marine Corps Reserve program that provides toys, books, and games to children in need. To participate, please donate new, unwrapped toys by dropping them off in the main entrance hallway at the club. We’ll be collecting donations from now through early December.
Keeping Neighbors Warm
This year, Bishops Bay is partnering with WayForward to collect new or gently used coats. Donations will be accepted until November 11th, and you can drop off coats directly to Cheryl.
Thank you for your generosity and support in helping brighten the holiday season for our communities!
A brief history of golf carts.
Golf carts are a staple here at Bishops Bay, not only on the course but also in the surrounding communities. But have you ever wondered: where did golf carts come from?
For hundreds of years, golf carts were not the familiar site on the golf course that they are now. As with many inventions, it’s difficult to pinpoint their precise origins, because many people started to develop similar machines around the same time in the early 1930s.
The history of the golf cart may date back to 1932, when Lyman Beecher, a disabled golfer from Florida, invented a rickshaw-style cart that was pulled by two caddies. It was initially unpowered, but later versions featured additional wheels and six car batteries to make it motorized, though it only covered short distances. Another notable early use was by J.K. Wadley of Texarkana, who adapted a three-wheeled electric cart originally meant to transport senior citizens in Los Angeles. However, Wadley discovered that they didn’t do well on the soft grounds of the golf course.
The first electric golf cart was introduced in 1936 by the Cushman Motor Company. It marked a significant improvement in terms of efficiency compared to Beecher’s original design. Electric golf carts gained further attention in the early 1950s, thanks to Merle Williams in California. His Marketeer Company began producing electric golf carts in 1951, spurred by innovations in electric vehicles during World War II. Around the same time, gasoline-powered models were also developed, with Max Walker creating the “Walker Executive,” a three-wheeled gas-powered cart in 1957. The industry grew rapidly with manufacturers like E-Z-Go, Cushman, and Club Car joining the market between 1954 and 1958.
In the 1950s, gas-powered golf carts began to emerge, led by an inventor named R.J. Jackson, who designed a three-wheeled cart aimed primarily at golfers with disabilities. This version gained popularity for its extended range, but it faced criticism for noise and smoke, which initially led to bans on some golf courses. Over time, the design improved, leading to reduced emissions and increased acceptance.
By the 1960s, golf carts were widely accepted by U.S. golfers, transitioning from being aids for the disabled to essential tools for all golfers. Harley-Davidson entered the golf cart market in 1963, producing both electric and gas-powered carts. These models, known for their durability, became collectors items. Later in the 1960s, manufacturers began to add features like adjustable seats, cup holders, and storage compartments.
By the 1980s, luxury models emerged, offering amenities such as stereos and air conditioning. Today, golf carts have evolved into high-tech vehicles equipped with GPS and other conveniences, serving not only on golf courses but also in communities, resorts, and other venues.
