With the 2025 Men’s Bishops Invitational just a couple of days away, we thought it was a good time to take a look back at the exciting finish to last year’s invitational, when Team Hatch secured the win with the longest winning putt in Bishops Bay tournament history by Chris Zimmerman.

Continue scrolling after that for a few golf course tips and reminders from John.

Fixing Divots on the Course

After a rainfall, you may notice temporary cart path only rules on holes throughout the course. These measures help protect the course during soft and wet conditions.

When it comes to divot repair, here’s what to keep in mind:

  • If the turf comes out clean in one piece and the ground is soft, replace it like a puzzle piece and step it down.
  • If it’s broken or dry, fill the divot with sand from your bottle instead.
  • Sand refill stations are available near the clubhouse and turnhouses.
  • While you’re at it, feel free to fix any nearby divots too—it makes a big difference!

Bunker Care

John is on the 18th hole to share a few tips and reminders to help us all take better care of the bunkers throughout the season. Bunkers were a priority for Nick and our Agronomy Team even before the season opened, and will continue to be moving forward.

Here’s how you can help:

  • Enter from the low side of the bunker whenever possible to avoid shifting sand from the slopes and keep depth consistent.
  • Rake technique matters – use a combination of smooth pushes and pulls to level out the sand and erase footprints without clumping or dragging too quickly.
  • Place the rake perpendicular to the edge of the bunker when you’re finished, with the handle easily accessible for the next player.

A little bit of teamwork from each of us helps keep the course in great shape for everyone.

Addressing Ball Marks

If you’ve played a few rounds already this summer, you’ve probably noticed the greens are rolling nicely—and we want to keep them that way. One simple habit can make a big difference: repairing ball marks.

In our latest video, we cover a few easy ways to be more mindful out on the course—and to leave things better than you found them.

First, when you’re headed to the green, try carrying your wedge, putter, and sand bottle with you. As you approach the green, set them down in a spot you’ll have to walk past on your way off. This helps prevent leaving equipment behind and keeps play moving smoothly.

Now, onto the greens. After any shot, even short ones from just 20 yards off, it’s important to check for a ball mark. Especially when the greens are soft from rain, nearly every shot will leave some kind of indentation.

We’ve seen some improvement this year already—thank you!—but there’s still room to grow. To repair a ball mark properly, we recommend the free single-prong tools available in the golf shop. Rather than lifting the turf, gently push in around the edge of the mark and tamp it down with your putter. Done right, the spot will be nearly invisible.
