Exciting times!
This past week, Jarrin has been finalizing work on getting the pool ready for the weekend, and a team visited the Club to resurface our tennis courts for the season. Continue reading for more information and some highlights of both.
Getting the Tennis Courts Ready
If you stopped by the club today you might have noticed the flurry of activity on the tennis courts. We’re giving our clay courts their annual resurfacing—an essential tune‑up that keeps them clean, cushioned underfoot, and fun to play on all season long. Here’s a quick primer on what makes clay courts special and why a little extra TLC goes such a long way.
Where Clay Courts Began
Clay tennis courts trace their roots to the French Riviera of the late 1800s. British champions William and Ernest Renshaw, searching for a way to protect sun‑baked grass courts in Cannes, topped the turf with finely crushed terracotta roof tiles. The result was a slower‑playing, higher‑bouncing surface that soon caught on across Europe. The traditional red clay still used at Roland‑Garros is made from brick dust, while the green “Har‑Tru” variety common in North America uses crushed metabasalt. Both share the same fundamentals: softer footing, longer rallies, and a game that rewards patience and strategy.
Daily Care Makes the Difference
Clay behaves more like a garden than a hard court: it needs water, grooming, and the occasional roll to stay healthy.
What Today’s Resurfacing Involves
-
Scraping & leveling – The crew removes any high spots and redistributes material to low areas for a perfectly flat base.
-
Top‑dressing – A fresh layer of clay is spread evenly across the surface.
-
Watering & rolling – Multiple cycles of misting and rolling help the new clay settle and bond.
-
Line setting – New lines are carefully measured and laid out, and nailed down with long aluminum nails.
Why It Matters
Consistent resurfacing extends the life of the court, prevents bad bounces, and protects the sub‑surface from water damage. Most important, it ensures you get the classic clay‑court experience: longer points, strategic shot‑making, and a unuque, smooth glide underfoot.
We’ll reopen the courts as soon as the fresh layer has settled and court maintenance is completed. See you on the baseline soon!
Getting the Pool Ready
Getting the Pool Ready
A favorite among members and staff alike, the Bishops Bay Pool is a hallmark of summer at the Club—and behind the scenes, our Director of Maintenance, Jarrin Hutchinson, has been hard at work getting everything ready. From cleaning and filling the pool to treating and testing the water, Jarrin and the team are making sure everything is on track for opening later this month.
The pool holds over 200,000 gallons of water and takes nearly two weeks to fill, even with multiple hoses running. To keep things pristine, we use a specialized dual-filtration system that removes both large and fine debris, helping ensure the water stays crystal clear all season long.
It may look simple on the surface, but maintaining the pool is a careful, ongoing process—one we take seriously to ensure every visit is safe, refreshing, and enjoyable for our members.
We can’t wait to open it back up later this month!
