Today we bring you a feature on our Lead Assistant Superintendent, Andrew Hessa, and a presigious career development opportunity he recently embarked on.
Celebrating Leadership: Andrew’s Experience in the Prestigious EXCEL Program
Bishops Bay’s Lead Assistant Superintendent, Andrew Hessa, recently started the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America’s EXCEL Leadership Program. As one of only eight assistant superintendents selected nationwide, Andrew is engaging in an ambitious three-year journey designed to develop leaders who excel not only on the course, but also in their communities and the broader golf industry.
A Memorable Experience in Arizona
Recently, Andrew went on his first program trip to Scottsdale, Arizona, where he had the opportunity to tour Desert Mountain—one of the top clubs in the country. This experience was more than just a visit; it was an in-depth exploration of a $150 million operation that runs year-round and includes eight different golf courses. Andrew gained valuable insights into their daily operations, maintenance protocols, and the cohesive culture that propels their success. Beyond the tour, the trip included educational sessions focused on essential career-building skills such as resume enhancement, navigating member relationships, and preparing for future superintendent roles.
Andrew noted that networking with fellow assistant superintendents was one of the highlights of the trip, as it allowed him to exchange ideas and solutions, reinforcing the value of shared experiences in the industry.
Looking Ahead: Next Steps in the Program
The upcoming phases of the EXCEL program promise even more growth. Andrew’s winter trip will take him to San Diego for the GCSAA Conference and Trade Show, offering further learning with top industry leaders and the chance to represent the state during National Golf Day in Washington, D.C. Over the next three years, he will participate in various events and workshops designed to elevate his expertise and broaden his perspective.
What This Means for Bishops Bay
Having Andrew in this prestigious program is not just a personal achievement; it’s a win for the Bishops Bay community as well. His commitment to professional growth and exposure to best practices from top-tier courses across the nation will undoubtedly enhance our own operations, especially under the leadership of our new Director of Agronomy, Nick Krysinski.
Congratulations Andrew! We look forward to following along with your journey over the coming months and years.
